Laurinburg Alive With Jazz is a yearlong tribute to jazz and is dedicated to Jimmy and Morris Morgan. In addition to the Morgan brothers, the region has a long tradition of celebrating great jazz. Dizzy Gillispie and John Coltrane were born close by and Dizzy went to school at the Laurinburg Institute. Every other Friday evening the Cypress Bend Vineyards in nearby Wagram has it Jazzy Friday with a great jazz band. Every May, Cheraw has a jazz festival in honor of Dizzy Gillispie. SACS is providing another great venue for jazz lovers. Jazz series honors community leaders, philanthropists and great jazz musicians Jimmy and Morris Morgan, who gave so much to all. The Morgan Family has been closely involved with tshe cultural, as well as the commercial, life of Scotland County. Jimmy Morgan (the late James L. Morgan) and his brother Morris (the late Marcus Morrison Morgan) were devoted patrons of the arts and benefactors of St. Andrews University. Jimmy studied piano with his aunt, Bessie Gibson Morgan and clarinet from her son, Harold Gibson and also learned to play saxophone. With various bands he played at McCallie School, Davidson College and at the 1942 Rose Bowl, which was played in Durham. His love of jazz and swing music of the 1930s and 1940s kept him active playing in various bands for numerous charitable causes on a statewide and local basis. Morris Morgan was a talented musician and a renowned North Carolina jazz pianist. Jim Morgan (the Rev. James L. Morgan, Jr.) continues the family’s musical heritage, and is a gifted pianist. The Jimmy and Morris Morgan Jazz Series includes concerts by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans on Friday, October 12 and the Langston Hughes Project on Saturday, February 16th. The 2nd Saturday Jazz Jam and Cabaret are a monthly tribute to these two great men.
