Poetry Night with Beth Copeland
The Storytelling & Arts Center of the Southeast is excited to bring new programmingin support of literacy month to Scotland County by presenting a poetry night, Thursday, October 1st at 7:00 pm at the Storytelling & Arts Center of the Southeast. Local poet, Beth Copeland will present “Erasures: Writing Poems on Alzheimer’s and Memory Loss.”
Copeland will show and discuss a short film of her original poem “Falling Lessons: Erasure One,” a poem inspired by her late father’s struggle with Alzheimer’s. She created the poem by erasing portions of a longer poem to reflect his memory loss.
Motionpoems, a nonprofit arts organization based in Minneapolis, sponsored the film through a partnership with VIDA: Women in Literature. Video artist Anh Vu selected Copeland’s poem as the subject of her film.
After showing the film and discussing the poem, Copeland will present an interactive workshop on writing erasure poems, using passages from Jack London’s The Call of the Wild, articles about Alzheimer’s, and poems.
You don’t have to be a poet or writer to participate! Writing an erasure poem is an easy exercise that anyone can try. Materials will be provided.
